Israelis have come together around the country to remember two years since the Hamas-led assault on 7 October 2023, as talks advanced in Egypt over a conclusion to the conflict in the Gaza Strip.

The attack saw in excess of 1,200 people killed and 251 others abducted back to Gaza as hostages. It was the uniquely deadliest day for Jews since the Holocaust.

Israel responded by initiating a armed campaign in Gaza which has killed more than 67,000 people, according to the region's Hamas-run health ministry. Its numbers are seen as reliable by the United Nations and other international bodies.

"The bloodthirsty opponents have struck forcefully, but they have not broken us," the leader stated on that day.

He also promised to "accomplish all the objectives of the war: the return of all the abducted, the removal of the Hamas administration and the promise that Gaza will not present a risk to Israel".

Memorial Ceremonies Across Israel

The national leadership postponed official commemorations until mid-October - after the conclusion of the festive season - but ceremonies still were held throughout the country on that day.

A remembrance service for the relatives of people killed in the Hamas incident was held in Tel Aviv. Put together by the families themselves, it was televised across Israeli TV networks.

Some time earlier, a silent tribute was held throughout the country.

Negotiation Talks in Egypt

At the same time, the conflicting parties' delegations gathered in the Egyptian coastal city of Sharm el-Sheikh for a continuing round of mediated discussions to examine the terms of the proposal.

A senior Palestinian official involved in the negotiations revealed that an evening round of indirect talks began at 19:00 Cairo time.

The representative explained the day's discussions ended without significant progress, amid differences over the proposed Israeli pullout plans from Gaza and over guarantees Hamas seeks to ensure Israel does not restart combat after the initial stage of the agreement.

He noted that the discussions are "tough and have still not deliver any significant progress," but pointed out that mediators are working hard to narrow the gaps between the conflicting groups.

Critical Issues in Negotiations

  • A lasting truce
  • The trade of the captives still detained by Hamas for detainees from Gaza
  • The pullout of military personnel from Gaza
  • Plans for relief supplies provision
  • After-conflict management of the region

Citizen Sentiment

In the city's Hostages Square previously, 29-year-old a woman - whose family member lived through the assault on the gathering, where 378 people were lost their lives and many more were abducted by Hamas militants - shared: "Nowhere feels like home anymore and until each abducted person come back none of us will have peace of mind."

"When we see everyone home again, we can breathe again. Then we can start to heal," she added.

Near the prime minister's home in Jerusalem, people assembled to express their backing for the relatives of the hostages. Israel says nearly fifty remain in detention in Gaza, twenty of whom are thought to be living.

Activist a participant explained: "We need do every compromise needed for the abducted to come back home. But we truly desire guarantees that we will be secure."

Surveys now regularly indicate that approximately the majority of Israelis desire the hostilities to end in exchange for the freedom of the hostages.

Gaza Conditions

At the site of the gathering, those paying respects assembled to remember the victims.

From the site, the boom of aerial bombardments and artillery could be noticed just a brief space away in Gaza, where local people reported the severe Israeli shelling carried on.

In Gaza City, attacks were reported in the morning of Tuesday in the western Tal al-Hawa, Rimal and locality neighbourhoods and in the east side district of Sheikh Radwan, as well the settlement to the north-west.

"As the evening arrives, the fear appears with it," relocated Gaza City resident a mother, whose teenage son was lost his life by an Israeli bombing last year, shared.

"My family are terrified of the bombings. All the night we are sleeping together, embracing, notably my smallest child who places his head on me the entire evening."

"Continuously we check the news to see developments. And I'm worried that this halt will not be completed and that the conflict will resume to us."

Humanitarian Crisis

The healthcare center in Gaza City reported it had received the remains of six people by the afternoon, including three who died in an Israeli strike in the southern al-Sabra neighbourhood.

A different healthcare center in the south region of that area reported another two dead people had been brought there. An individual was killed by Israeli troops while looking for assistance to the south, medical staff reported.

The region's health ministry said 25 of the {territ
