The English golfer Clinches the Abu Dhabi Title in Thrilling Play-Off Showdown Against Fellow Englishman Fleetwood

The 30-year-old golfer demonstrated remarkable composure to secure the prestigious Abu Dhabi title on the final day, beating his compatriot in a tense playoff after a rollercoaster final round of competition.

Rai sank a crucial birdie putt from around eight foot to clinch the win, repeating his only previous tournament triumph at the 2020 Scottish Open, which was also a playoff win against the same opponent.

Sunday's Play Excitement

Rai started the last day with a one-shot lead over fellow Englishman Tommy Fleetwood and Denmark’s Højgaard. He ended up with a total score of twenty-under after a topsy-turvy, 67 final round that included seven birdie putts and two bogeys.

The challenger moved one shot ahead with the 16th and 17th remaining after a birdie on the 16th, but Rai pulled level again on the seventeenth and then failed to convert a ten-foot birdie putt to win outright on the final green.

Play-Off Climax

This led to a playoff at Yas Links where Rai triumphed to claim the title and $1.5m (£1.13 million) in prize money.

{“Tommy is a phenomenal player and an even more individual. To play with him the final two rounds was truly memorable,” said Rai, the present world No 30. “You’re so focused on playing the round and staying in the zone, it’s hard to put into words at the moment how it feels. It is amazing to be stood here.”

Notable Contenders

Rory McIlroy found himself just too much to make up, coming up a stroke short in a shared third place with Højgaard, after a stunning 62 closing round of ten-under. It was McIlroy’s lowest-ever score on the European Tour, comprising eight birdie putts and an eagle.

The Danish golfer carded six birdie putts of his as well, but his hopes of leading the standings were hit by a bogey on the twelfth. English golfer Richard Mansell produced an excellent last round seven-under to finish tied for fifth with Australian Hillier.
