Participants of all abilities – even novices – will learn how to design and produce modern art. A portion of the time will be spent outside, working on structured activities in the open. These initial charcoal drawings and watercolour studies will then be worked on in the studio, with participants completing multiple interpretive scenes in acrylic paint to be exhibited in the local community. Participants has sole use of the hotel, which is built around an central patio and has a rooftop with panoramic vistas over the hills. The cost encompasses five days of painting tuition; full board; and an trip to the local castle and other local sights.

Vegetarian Culinary in Portugal

This Mediterranean cooking retreat, located at a villa by the river in the inland Portuguese region, is draws inspiration from the plant-based cuisine of celebrated cooks. Participants will learn to produce selection of small dishes, take part in a falafel-making workshop, refine mid-morning meals such as shakshuka, and make hearty mains such as a rich mushroom stew and moussaka. There are trips to the local market and a local vineyard to sample Portuguese wines, combined with leisure time for strolls by the Funcho River, to unwind on the terrace or swim in the infinity pool. Street Dance in Buckinghamshire

This energetic camp is an uplifting, welcoming weekend adults’ street dance camp in High Wycombe. The daily schedule each day is a party-style warm-up session, then several 90-minute classes covering different street dance styles, then an hour-long freestyle session to demonstrate those solos. Dancers are divided into groups based on skill level, so it is perfect for those who are completely new to street dance, all the way to advanced dancers or instructors. This event does not provide accommodation but there are a number of hostels and hotels nearby, and it is under an hour by rail into central London.

Sea Shanty Weekend in Cornwall

This coastal town is the ideal spot for a maritime music retreat. Participants will be taught historic sailing songs from a folk singer and vocal coach, and try their hand at writing their own. There will be vocal warmups, breath control techniques, stagecraft advice and a closing performance. The retreat is based at a rural hotel overlooking the bay. All meals are included, such as a Cornish cream tea on the first day, cooked or continental breakfasts, lunches to go and three-course dinners. Grog, unfortunately, is not included. All together now: “What will we do with the drunken sailor …?”

Writing in Crete

Author and tutor Greg Mosse leads the daily workshops on this authors' getaway. He explores topics including story structure, character development, setting and suspense, to submitting work to publishers. Greg’s wife, the well-known writer Kate Mosse, will participate in special sessions at the start and finish of the retreat. The holiday is based at a traditional complex in Vamos at the foot of the Lefka Ori – ten one- and two-bedroom cottages surround a central garden with a pool (non-writing partners are encouraged to come along). On the final evening, budding authors celebrate with a concert in the garden and a farewell dinner.

Beginners' Apiculture in Mid Wales

The Centre for Alternative Technology near Machynlleth runs a host of courses covering sustainability: from wildlife gardening to upcycling. This weekend course will help participants understand the basics of apiary management, explore the biology of bees and discover their environmental benefits. It is designed to produce “ecologically mindful beekeepers”. This course is also a opportunity to relax in the organization's carefully maintained forests, which are home to wildlife, otters, dormice, bats and uncommon bird species. Bed and breakfast the night before is 80 pounds, and full-board accommodation for the weekend is 97 pounds.

Yachting for Beginners in Essex

These new weekend sailing courses are spent on dinghies and Dufours on the Blackwater estuary.
