It all began with a single photograph, arguably the most significant ever snapped of a member of the monarchy.

Present was the Earl of Inverness, with his arm around a young woman, while another individual beamed knowingly in the backdrop.

Lacking that photograph, taken at a social event in 2001, few would have credited the claims of a young woman who stated she was transported across the Atlantic and compelled to have cursory intimate contact with a individual of the monarchy?

An odd, telling move by someone who had openly claimed to have not heard of her, said he could no have had relations with her, and yet provided a substantial sum of his mother's resources to resolve a protracted lawsuit.

A Long Period of Disgrace

Considering this, conversations of the monarchy acting swiftly to cut Andrew off are misguided. This controversy has endured for the largest portion of 15 years since that picture, and another snapshot of Andrew strolling congenially with a convicted sex offender emerged.

• Hubris: For what duration did his family members, perhaps even his relatives, realize that Andrew was so self-entitled?
• Questionable Associations: They must have known, if his staff and the law enforcement were fulfilling their roles, that he had some extremely unsavory companions given he openly hosted them to palaces.
• Monetary Excess: If the family did not know about his sexual proclivities, they certainly knew about his overspending with state resources.

Trips were listed in official documents: chopper travel from the palace to a golf course and back again in time for lunch, exclusive air travel instead of commercial flights, all for the convenience of "Airmiles Andy".

A Life of Privilege

Additionally the presumption which demanded deference when he walked into a space or the extreme awareness about his royal titles used on his official documents in communication to his associates.

He managed to escape consequences while his matriarch, who inexplicably indulged him, was still alive. The monarch did at least revoke him of royal responsibilities and military positions in the aftermath of his disastrous and, we now know, deceptive television interview six years ago.

Latest Events

Just in the last two weeks that events accelerated, following the release of books giving more disturbing particulars of his conduct and that of his companions.

More information have again revealed Andrew's belief that he could get away with lying about his relationship with a convicted criminal.

People (and the journalists) were far in advance of the royal family. There was no one of any significance to speak up for him, a outcome of all those years of hubris.

Monarchical Concerns

The more astute monarchical figures understood that. The key objective is to hand down the crown, if not as previously at least complete and unstained.

Over time the last 190 years trying to reverse the legacy of past sovereigns, showing they are valuable, responsible and responsive to their citizens.

His actions endangered all that in peril in an time when submission and discretion is no longer enough.

Aftermath

Ultimately, the notoriously hesitant sovereign was pressured further. There was no alternative. The institution had relinquished authority of the narrative.

Currently the loss of honorifics and the continued and permanent public humiliation that will afflict Andrew most deeply.

• Demotion: Reduced to just a private citizen
• Prior Instance: The first member to lose his honorifics in recent history
• Armed Forces: Notably painful given his service in the conflict

He remains a constitutional officer, theoretically able to substitute for the king, and he is still in the lineage to the throne, but none of these will ever come to pass.

Coming Developments

Can persons he meets still defer to him? Might they still forget themselves and call him Sir? Would they say Andrew,

Naturally, he is not moving to a common area, but to the monarchy's large grounds at a royal residence.

There, he will be furnished by the monarch with one of the estate properties and given some sort of personal stipend.

This is not his prior accommodation, where he paid a nominal payment for more than 20 years, and the area is a bit distant, but even so it may not be far enough.

Pending Matters

The situation continues. There are still records in the hands of overseas authorities to be disclosed.

• Political Pressure: Might legislators request additional information
• Financial Investigation: Or scrutinize the misuse of public money
• Criminal Investigation: There may even be a police investigation into his actions

Possibly for the present the reputational impact to the monarchy is contained. The narrative from the royal household was evidently that the stripping of titles was what the king, and particularly other senior family members, desired.

Changed Stance

An end to deception that Andrew was doing it voluntarily. And, significantly, the short statement showed evidently that the institution were siding with the accuser's account of events.

Even more, for the initial instance they finally showed regard for the survivors: "The measures are considered essential, despite the fact that he continues to deny the allegations against him."

Ultimately it is entitlement, selfishness and inactivity that will undermine the institution. In his stupidity, personal excess and greed, Andrew seems never to have understood that truth.
