Big 12 Conference Commissioner Labels Notre Dame Remarks Following CFP Omission as ‘Completely Out of Bounds’

At a public rebuke, Big 12 Conference commissioner asserted that Notre Dame athletic director, Pete Bevacqua, was “totally out of bounds” for recent remarks about the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC).

The Source of the Tension

Notre Dame has a gridiron scheduling agreement with the ACC and is a full member in other sports. Bevacqua has argued that the ACC actively damaged Notre Dame’s chances to make the College Football Playoff, instead choosing to pushing for the selection of the University of Miami.

“The ACC does wonderful things for Notre Dame, but we provide significant football value to the ACC, and we didn’t understand why you would go out of your way to try to undermine us in this selection,” Bevacqua said.

The Hurricanes ultimately received the CFP spot over Notre Dame, largely due to securing the direct matchup between the two teams. Notre Dame's AD also claimed that the ACC engaged in a coordinated social media push over several weeks indicating its preference for Miami.

An Egregious Reaction

Subsequently on Tuesday, Yormark addressed the allegations at the Sports Business Journal’s Intercollegiate Athletics Forum.

“My opinion is that his conduct has been out of line,” Yormark said. “He is totally out of bounds in his approach and if he was in the same room, I’d tell him the same thing.”

The criticism is especially notable given Bevacqua’s special role. He serves on the College Football Playoff Management Committee alongside the ten FBS conference commissioners, advocating for the concerns of football independent Notre Dame.

Past Context and Speculative Rumors

Yormark further highlighted the support the ACC provided Notre Dame during the Covid-affected 2020 season, giving the Irish a full conference schedule and a place in its championship game.

“It has been egregious,” Yormark reiterated. “It’s been unacceptable going after Jim Phillips, when they saved Notre Dame during Covid...”

Talk had spread about Notre Dame possibly leaving the ACC and partnering with the Big 12. Yet, the commissioner's pointed comments on Tuesday seem to make such a move unlikely in the immediate future.

The Irish, who reached the CFP final last season, have announced they will decline a bowl game after missing out this year.
